Musical culture in Cyprus with a focus on the piano works and piano pedagogy

The diploma thesis deals with the Cypriot music culture and mainly focuses on piano education and piano works. The aim of this work was to introduce the main representatives of Cypriot classical music, the music life on Cyprus and the history of piano education until the present day. A part of the work is also a personal research, carried out by a questionnaire, and a didactic and interpretive insight on the fundamental instructive work Kinderlaunen of the Cypriot pianist and composer Nicolas Economou. The work is divided into six chapters, which draw information from accessible literature and mainly from a research made in this field. The six chapters could be notionally divided into two parts, theoretical and practical. The theoretical part deals with the music history of the island by introducing distinctive personalities of the Cypriot classical music and by mapping the music life on Cyprus. Furthermore, this part deals with the Cypriot music education system and the teaching methods in piano education. The practical part contains the analysis and results of the submitted questionnaire and the didactic and interpretive insight on the instructive piano work of the earlier mentioned Cypriot pianist and composer. Conception of Piano Pedagogy in Lisbon

My thesis is based on my studies in Lisbon (Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa), I bring deeper insight into the Portuguese piano pedagogy in the territory of Lisbon. The work is based on the system of Portuguese music education and describes the significant educational institutions of music. Piano pedagogy is defined in the historical development well - founded on available literature, more attention is given to some important personalities of teachers and composers in the field of piano music. Part of the work is dedicated to my personal reflection of Portuguese piano pedagogy and my own experiences with teachers, especially consultations with professor Miguel Henriques, who summarized pedagogical principles in his book The (Well) Informed Piano. Methodology of Elementary Piano Teaching with Suggestion of Optimal Solution for Selection and Arrangement of Sheet Music

The beginnings of piano playing of children play an important role in laying quality pianistic groundings, which are crucial for their further pianistic development as well as for building their relationship with the instrument and music itself. This thesis is devoted to the study of elementary piano teaching of children aged 5-7 years. The aim of the thesis is to map the current state of piano pedagogy in Czech Republic and to propose optimal methodological procedures and solutions in the initial piano lessons based on modern pedagogical approaches and the needs of contemporary piano pedagogy. In five chapters of the work, this goal will be achieved by examining the historical background of piano schools in Bohemia over the centuries to this day, by setting up theoretical and practical bases for the researched issue and finally by research itself. Within the framework of practical bases, which served as a basis for subsequent research, an optimal methodological approach to teaching in the early stage of piano playing was proposed for children aged 5-7 years, which corresponds to the most modern requirements of the field. Piano competitions and their importance for the development of piano students at Schools of Art

This diploma thesis focuses on the phenomenon of the piano competitions. The main aim of the theoretical part is to describe the historical development of the piano competitions and to analyse the world's most recognized piano competitions. The following chapter discusses the topic of a piano career. It provides an extensive knowledge of the piano competitions, gathered from the famous pianists and piano teachers. Their pedagogical statements have been used in the practical part of the thesis to define hypothesis for the research survey, and also to gain a better insight into the use of the piano competitions as a pedagogical tool in the piano students development. The final part analyses the survey results and summarizes the piano competitions that are organised for young pianists in the Czech Republic. In addition, it provides practical recommendations for young students and their teachers on how to prepare for a piano competition.
Artistic-pedagogical Legacy of Alena Fišerová

The Diploma Thesis is a presentation of the notable Czech piano teacher Alena Fišerová, who spent all her professional life at the "Vzorová hudební škola" (Model Music School) in Voršilská Str. in the borough of Praha 1. The first part of the Thesis focuses on her family background and childhood. Her studies and professional life are also described. This information is mostly based on witness accounts and memories of her former pupils and friends. Exact data was verified using personal documents available and the chronicles of the Vzorová hudební škola. The Thesis follows in detail her method of teaching the piano as well as the contribution that she presented in her day and time. Alena Fišerová did not leave her mark in piano pedagogy as a teacher alone but also as the creator of many sheet music compilations, either alone or in collaboration with others. The best-known titles out of her publishing activities are the Album etud I. - V. (Album of Études, vol. I - V), to this day possibly the most commonly used compilations at the Základní umělecká škola (Fine Arts School) in the Czech Republic. The Role of Self-Regulation, Quantity of Practice and Self-Efficacy in Self-Assessment and Improved Performance among Lebanese and Czech Piano Students

This work studies the role of self-regulation and self-efficacy during piano practice in improved self-assessment and performance, since in the last couple of decades, research has shown that number of hours of practice is not the only predictor of improved performance. Piano students at the Beirut and Prague conservatories wrote weekly journals assessing their self-regulation during practice for nine months and then performed in an exam, in addition to filling an online questionnaire. Results showed that students self-regulated mostly using the method and social factors dimension. Moreover, although students in Prague performed a harder repertoire, they were not better in self-regulation compared to the students in Beirut, except for the time dimension of self-regulation. A list of self-regulatory behaviors is presented at the end of the work, in addition to the implications for music educators and piano students and the contributions to the field of music education in terms of preparation for performance in the absence of a teacher. Hugo Riemann's Correspondence with Josef Jiránek from the Fonds of the Bedřich Smetana Museum

The thesis focuses on autograph letters sent by Hugo Riemann to Josef Jiránek, currently archived in the Bedřich Smetana Museum. The collection includes nine letters (two copies by Josef Jiránek), 12 postal cards and two envelopes. There are also two printed announcements (related to Riemann's 60th birthday.) Apart from addressing the theory of phrasing, Riemann's letters reflect upon theoretical and teaching treatises by both Riemann and Jiránek. The letters served as an invaluable source of information for Riemann's fundamental piece of work, the Musik-Lexikon. The objective of the thesis is to duly transcribe, summarize and comment on the correspondence which has received little attention by scholars so far.
